When we do OEM manufacturing for Weatherford’s W-Series Pumps, we follow strict inspection procedures for quality checks. One of the procedures is Liquid Penetrant Inspection, which is utilized to detect surface defects in both ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic materials, such as metals, ceramics, and plastics.
A liquid penetrant, usually fluorescent or visible dye, is applied to the surface of a specifically designed tool. The QC worker hits a specifically designed tool to make compact contact between the cylinder internal surface and the tool. As a result, the liquid penetrant will be forced into surface defects if there’s any. The surface is examined under appropriate lighting to detect indications of defects.
